The Assembly Committee on Public Service yesterday summoned the finance and resource mobilization manager at Kirinyaga Water and Sanitation Company (KIRIWASCO). Mr. George Mureithi was tasked to shed more light on allegations raised by the workers’ union in the institution. Among the issues that the union has alleged include non-remittance of workers’ pension which was said to affect most employees especially those who had retired years back.
Chairperson of the committee on Public Service Hon. Bernard Gichangi brought Mr. Mureithi to task when he asked the reasons why staff pension was in arrears despite the same being deducted in their salaries. On his part, the finance manager said that he was well aware of the pending pension remittance and that he had prioritized the matter in his work schedule at the onset of the last financial year. He further said that part of the reason why the company was having a huge pension liability was because of financial difficulties being experienced at the moment.
Other issues that were touching on staff welfare took center stage during the summon session with nominated Member Hon. Daisy Githinji, Kerugoya Ward MCA Hon. Eric Muchina and his Kangai Ward Counterpart Hon. James Wambu putting the KIRIWASCO management to task over a wide range of allegations.
Kanyekiine Ward MCA Hon. CPA. Waziri Moses Maina in his submission urged the finance manager to furnish the committee with relevant regulatory circulars detailing the number of times the Board of Directors should hold meetings as that would help the committee make informed recommendations moving forward.
Last week, the committee had summoned the Company Board of Directors and is now expected to generate a report for debate within reasonable time.
