A section of members of Mutira Farmers Cooperative Society limited today petitioned the County Assembly with a view of addressing what they say is contrary to the principle of equity.
Mr. Mwai Chomba, Mr. Josephat Miano and Mr. Peter Muriuki today appeared before the joint Committee on Agriculture and cooperatives which was co-chaired by Wamumu Ward MCA Hon Peter Njiru and his Kangai Ward counterpart, Hon. James Wambu.
The petitioners want the by-laws to be amended so that farmers who produce less than 300 kilograms of coffee annually can be involved in making key decisions at the society.
They also want the cooperative society’s name to read ‘Mutira Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society’ as was the case when the society was established in 1954.
Other changes that they want amended in the by-laws include dropping the requirement where one must produce 1,000 kilograms of coffee annually to qualify for an elective office in the society.
Members present during the hearing of the petition include; Hon. Kinyua Wangui – Mutira Ward, Hon. Bernard Gichangi – Nominated, Hon. Irene Gathuku – Nominated, Hon. Jane Wangu- Nominated, – Hon Fredrick Maina – Inoi Ward, Hon. Beatrice Mitaru -Nominated and Hon. Joseph Kiragu – Thiba.
Also present was the acting Director of Cooperative Development Mr. Haniel Kinyua Muchiri who gave expert advice on how to go about the alleged concerns tabled by petitioners.
The joint committee is expected to deliberate the petitioners concerns and table a report in the coming days.
