MCAs instruct the County Department of Environment and Natural resources to deliver a legislative proposal on climate change within 30 days.
Members of the County Assembly want the County Executive through the relevant department of environment and natural resources to develop a climate change legislative proposal within 30 days. This they said would enable the County Assembly establish a County climate action fund and emulate Makueni, Kitui, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa and Wajir Counties which have set up the same.
Kabare Ward MCA and mover of the motion Hon. Patrick Chomba noted that climate change was as a result of increased carbon dioxide in the environment which he said had adverse effects to the population in the entire world. Hon. Chomba further said that tourism which is a key economic pillar in the Country was among the most affected sectors hence the need to work towards mitigation of climate change.
While contributing to the debate, specially elected member Hon. Kepha Kariuki said that developed countries which are major emitters of greenhouse gases should lead from the front and prevent further damage to the environment. He noted that the Country had received an equivalent of Kes. 16 billion to curb climate change this financial year, money which he said was yet to be utilized at the County level because of lack of an elaborate climate change policy.
Climate change continues to be a serious challenge in the Country with the President noting during the 7th devolution conference that the current draught which has affected more than two million people is as a result of the menace.
