Members of the County Assembly have called for enhanced funding to the sports department to support, the 𝐺𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑜𝑟 𝑀𝑖𝑛𝑗𝑖 𝑀𝑖𝑛𝑗𝑖 𝐶𝑢𝑝 and the 𝑇𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑎 𝐻𝑒𝑙𝑎 Tournaments.

In a motion moved by the Chairperson of the Sports Committee and Inoi ward MCA Hon. Fredrick Maina the MCAs lauded the impact of the tournaments in identification of talents, promoting national cohesion and creating awareness on how sports can be used as a tool for youth empowerment.

In his remarks, Hon. Maina noted that Talanta Hela football tournament provided a valuable platform for talent exposure and the teams demonstrated a promising pool of young talent which if fully natured could contribute to the earning capacity of the players.

While speaking in support of the motion, the Leader of the Majority Party Hon. Benson Ngahu of Gathigiriri ward called for the augmenting upwards of the budget allocated to the sports departments to ensure that the players are well facilitated during tournaments, players are provided with the right sporting gear from the ward level and that sporting facilities are well maintained.

On his part Hon. Eric Muchina called for the expansion of the sports tournaments to accommodate other genres of sports such basketball, netball, athletics, so as to accommodate and identify a wider pool of talents and broaden the impact of sports amongst the youth.

The motion was unanimously supported by the MCAs with Hon. Thomas Mwangi, Hon. Daniel Mbungu, Hon. Timothy Kariuki, Hon. Moses Waziri, Hon. Susan Ndirangu, Hon. Bernard Gichangi, Hon. Daisy Githinji, Hon. Peter Karinga, Hon. Jane Wangu, Hon. James Wambu, and Hon. Irene Gathuku all speaking in support of the motion caling for gender responsiveness in sports, better financing and sporting facilities to amplify the impact of sports programs in the county.

The busy morning session saw the assembly host a delegation from Kerugoya ward who were in the  assembly to observe proceedings courtesy of Hon. Eric Muchina. The delegation included Bishop Chege of the Peoples Church, Pastor Peter Karana of the Peoples Church, and Pastor Douglas Mwangi of the Kenya Redeemed Church.  The County Assembly acknowledges the role of the church in fostering good leadership and in shaping leaders who are equipped to guide the community with wisdom and compassion.

In the afternoon session the assembly hosted students from St. Philips Baricho Secondary School in Mukure Ward who were on a study tour. The students had interactive sessions with the leadership of the County Assembly led by the Speaker Hon.Muteti Murimi and had engagements aimed at deepening their understanding of the devolved system of governance.
